Fisher Galleries was established in 1870 in Christchurch, New Zealand. For 140 years and six generations, Fisher Galleries was at the forefront of the New Zealand Art Market. From 2004 – 2008 Fisher Galleries was the driving force behind Fishers Online, a pioneering Online Art Auction website for the resale of fine art. Fisher Galleries specialised in selling artworks by New Zealand’s most renowned and sought after artists. The gallery also represented a number of leading international artists and regularly sourced significant International artworks for collectors in New Zealand.
In 2010, due to the retirement of 5th generation director John Fisher, and the earlier departure of his son Simon Fisher in 2008, Fisher Galleries closed the last of their gallery premises. John still has an active interest in the art market and regularly provides advice for clients who are looking to buy or sell artworks by prominent New Zealand and International artists. Other services include valuation appraisals for sale or insurance, restoration advice and collection management.
Simon Fisher left Fisher Galleries to start up his own specialist art consultancy business and has since gone in to partnership with another long-time and highly respected art consultant. The new business extends the services they could offer as art consultants to an online platform. Ocula is a portal to the art market where anyone can access leading contemporary art galleries, buy and sell artworks through a dedicated online art auction platform and explore and research art all in one place.
